Even though he was really more of a jazz-influenced "country" artist, I had to include him somewhere because his talents and contributions to guitar playing and music were immense. He picked with his first three fingers, with his thumb on the bass strings. He won 14 Grammys, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards and a Billboard Century Award. He's also in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is #28 on CMT's 40 Greatest Men of Country Music and Guitar Player magazine named him Popular Music's Most Influential Stylist.

It's rather safe to say that Grisman is one of the best and most influential mandolinists, and that he's played with many of the best bluegrass and newgrass musicians. He called his combination of Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli gypsy jazz, folk and bluegrass "Dawg music," which became one of the foundations of "newgrass."
